Some materials for Chapter I and most of the introductory and supplementary resources for Chapter 3 were developed by C. Zimmermann for his students at Carleton College. They have been significantly adapted for use here with permission. The epigrams on friendship were selected from Gibbs’ Brevissima. The XII Axiomata evolved from Dexter Hoyos’ Latin: How to Read It Fluently and resources by J. Gruber-Miller. Haverford and Bryn Mawr students in LATN104 (Friends & Enemies of Rome) tested earlier versions of this reader and made suggestions, especially for the selections of Justin’s Epitome on Dido, under the leadership of Dr. Katherine Whitcomb. Liam Meers (HC ’23) reviewed the entire manuscript in the summer of 2022. Celine Pak (HC ’23) and Sonia Singh (HC ’25) assisted in the conversion of this reader into its ultimate format and final editing in 2022–2023. Additional textual and pedagogical suggestions were made by Charles Kuper and the students of his intermediate Latin course.
